Chopper Trading May Bring Sutphen’s Career Full Circle
By, Jessica Titlebaum

Leslie Sutphen joined Chopper Trading as director of strategies and implementation this Monday. Leaving her consulting firm, Financial Markets Consulting, Sutphen looks forward to her responsibilities involving the firm’s overall security and risk-management procedures.

“I will be analyzing regulatory trends and identifying opportunities that stem from Dodd-Frank, high-frequency trading and what’s going on in Europe,” she says. “I am excited to be at a firm where we can take advantage of these opportunities with leading edge technology.”

Chopper Trading is a mid-sized proprietary trading firm founded in 2002 by Raj Fernando.

“Ninty-nine point nine percent of the reason I came to Chopper is because of Raj,” says Sutphen. “He is really dynamic and thinks about the industry in unique ways.”

Known for his out-of-the-box recruiting process, Fernando was quoted in Smart Business Chicago as saying he looks at recruitment as a marriage, and strives to build a long-term committed team. [1]

With Chopper's offices in Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and London, Sutphen reports to work at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) building.

“I am getting used to coming back to work in this building,” she says, recalling her early days in the industry. Sutphen began her career in the same building, as an OEX equity options trader when the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) was on the eighth floor of the CBOT.

Sutphen’s in-depth industry experience includes a leading role at Newedge as the head of eSolutions, where she was responsible for the company’s trading product line and coordinating the firm’s electronic trading functions with IT and Sales.

She also founded Prudential Securities' global institutional futures and options desk in London. She held various roles at Prudential including a role in the Institutional Financial Futures Department where she was responsible for the marketing of clearing and risk analysis systems.

“For most of my career, I have been on the other side of the [downtown Chicago] Loop, so it’s been great bumping into all the people I used to know on the floor.”

According to Smart Business Chicago, Chopper Trading boasts a zero turnover rate. If that’s the case, it seems Sutphen’s career may have just come full circle.
