Garry Jones is a derivatives executive and former CEO of the London Metal Exchange (LME). He officially retired from that position on January 23, 2017.

He took over that role on September 30, 2013 after being appointed to the position by the LME's parent, Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing in August 2013. [1] He replaced Martin Abbott, who announced his resignation from the LME in June.[2]

Jones is also HKEx’s co-head of global markets and a member of HKEx’s management committee.

Background

Jones spent many years in executive positions in the derivatives industry. He was the global head and executive vice president of NYSE Liffe from May 1, 2009, replacing Hugh Freedberg .[3] Jones was also head of global derivatives at NYSE Euronext but stepped down in 2012 after five years.

He previously served as executive director of business development and strategy at NYSE Liffe, where he was responsible for marketing, sales, product development and strategy.[4]

Jones joined Liffe from ICAP Plc, where he was chief executive officer of ICAP Electronic Broking (Europe).[5] Before joining ICAP, he was CEO and president of BrokerTec Europe Ltd, the bank-consortium-owned global fixed income electronic trading platform.[6]

Jones previously worked for almost 20 years in a variety of senior management roles in trading, sales and research for investment banks in the USA and Europe, focusing on the bond and derivatives markets, working for Bankers Trust, Merrill Lynch, Daiwa Securities and Banque Paribas.

He has been a member of the board of directors of the Qatar Exchange, LCH.Clearnet Group and the Federation of European Securities Exchanges. He was a founder member of the Futures and Options Association’s European Industry Council and was a member of the senior level Practitioner Panel that advised the Financial Services Authority (FSA) on new policy initiatives under the UK’s former regulatory regime.[7]

Education

Jones has a B.A. and an M.A. in Geology from Oxford University in the UK and an MBA from Stanford Business School in the US.
