Occupation Chairman of the Board
Employer NASDAQ
Location New York, NY

Robert Greifeld is chairman of the board of Nasdaq. He took over that role on January 1, 2017, after stepping down as CEO of the company after 13 years. He was succeeded by Adena Friedman.

In July of 2017 it was reported that Greifeld would become chairman of the board of the trading firm Virtu Financial after the company completes its $1.4 billion takeover of KCG Holdings Inc., taking over from Virtu founder Vincent Viola. The company disclosed the move in a regulatory filing on May 31.[1]

Greifeld was CEO of NASDAQ OMX starting in 2003, and led the company through a series of important acquisitions that extended its global footprint and expanded the company into all asset classes. In 2008, he led Nasdaq's merger with Stockholm-based OMX AB, as well as the acquisitions of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, [2] the Boston Stock Exchange and the European power market Nord Pool.[3]

As chief executive of Nasdaq OMX, he developed a reputation as an aggressive cost cutter. During his tenure, Nasdaq's market share of US stock trades and initial public offerings grew substantially, as did its profits.[4]

Greifeld has a more than 20-year history in technology, and as an entrepreneur created one of the first electronic stock order matching systems. Before serving as the CEO of NASDAQ until 2008, Greifeld led the sell-side businesses and the buy-side transaction routing businesses for SunGard Data Systems Inc. While serving as president and COO of Automated Securities Clearance, Inc. (began operating as a subsidiary of SunGard in March 1999), Greifeld led the team that created BRASS, an automated order routing and execution system, and made it the industry standard trade order management system for NASDAQ stocks.

Greifeld is a member of the Business Roundtable and the Partnership for New York City, an organization devoted to enhancing the local economy. He is chairman of the USA Track & Field Foundation, which supports inner city youth athletics[5] and he serves as a vice chairman on the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund Board.[6] [7] He also serves as a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. [8]

Greifeld holds a Masters in Business from New York University, Stern School of Business and a B.A. in English from Iona College. Greifeld's graduate school thesis was on the operation of The NASDAQ Stock Market.
