Before WeatherBell Analytics, Smith worked in sales roles at MDA Information Systems and WSI Corporation. He also worked as a weather derivatives specialist at Weather Services International (WSI).

Formerly, he was associate editor of Environmental Markets Newsletter, director of sales for John J. Lothian & Company, Inc. and a member of the MarketsWiki Development Team.

At John J. Lothian & Company, Inc., Smith focused on adding weather derivatives related information to MarketsWiki, as well as other subjects, while also pursuing other opportunities in weather derivatives.

Smith was previously vice president of sales and trading solutions for StormExchange, a firm that offering weather risk management tools for the energy, retail, agriculture and aviation industries. [2].

Prior to Storm Exchange, Smith was manager of alternative investments at CME Group. He ran day-to-day operations of the CME weather products from 2001-2007. He worked on launching new products, educating customers, handling client management issues and working on special projects that helped improve trading efficiency and market data transparency. [3]


Smith graduated from University of Dayton in 1994 with a B.A. in Finance and Communications.

He also earned an MBA from Illinois Institute of Technology, Stuart School of Business in 2001. He was the valedictorian for the graduate school.
