Donald MacKenzie is a professor of sociology at the University of Edinburgh. His books include "Inventing Accuracy" (1990), "Knowing Machines" (1996), and "Mechanizing Proof" (2001), published by MIT Press. He also wrote a book on automated high-frequency trading for Princeton University Press in 2021, "Trading at the Speed of Light: How Ultrafast Algorithms are Transforming Financial Markets." [1]

MacKenzie describes himself as a sociologist of science and technology, with the goal of his research "to throw new light on aspects of these that shape today's world." His examination of high-frequency trading was funded by the U.K. Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and a proposal to fund AdTech research was under consideration by ESRC as of May 2021. MacKenzie received a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Edinburgh and a Ph.D. in sociology, also from the University of Edinburgh. [4]
