HSBC Holdings Plc is a major international banking and financial services organization. It is named after its founding member, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, which opened for business in 1865.[1]
With listings on the London, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Bermuda stock exchanges, shares in HSBC Holdings Plc are held by around 200,000 shareholders in some 100 countries and territories, and about 3,900 offices in established and emerging markets. The shares are listed on the London, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Bermuda stock exchanges.
HSBC provides a range of financial services to around 100 million customers through four customer groups and global businesses: Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets, and Global Private Banking.
History[edit]
According to HSBC, Thomas Sutherland, a Scotsman who worked for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, realized that there was considerable demand for local banking facilities in Hong Kong and on the China coast and he helped to establish the bank, which opened in Hong Kong in March 1865 and in Shanghai a month later. Soon after its formation, the bank opened agencies and branches around the world.
By 1875 HSBC was present in seven countries across Asia, Europe and North America. It financed the export of tea and silk from China, cotton and jute from India, sugar from the Philippines and rice and silk from Vietnam. By 1900, the bank had expanded into 16 countries. HSBC bought Mercantile Bank and The British Bank of the Middle East in 1959, and in 1972 it formed a merchant banking arm. In the 1980s the bank bought Marine Midland Bank in the US.
In 1992, the newly created HSBC Holdings plc acquired full ownership of the UK’s Midland Bank. Following the acquisition, HSBC moved its headquarters to London.[2]
On Jan. 1, 2009 HSBC became the first foreign bank to incorporate locally in the fast-growing Vietnamese banking sector after gaining approval from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) to set up a Wholly Foreign-Owned Bank (WFOB) in Vietnam in September 2008.
In August 2019 the board of HSBC removed chief executive John Flint after just 18 months in the job.[3]
In March 2023 HSBC Holdings said it was buying the UK arm of Silicon Valley Bank for a symbolic £1, rescuing SVB as it imploded.[4]
