The Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) requires lending institutions to report public loan data. It was enacted by Congress in 1975 and implemented by the Federal Reserve Board's Regulation C.
Using the loan data submitted by financial institutions, the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) creates aggregate tables for each metropolitan statistical area or metropolitan division, and individual institution disclosure reports.
