Richard David Anthony Berliand is chairman of the board of TP ICAP plc, the world’s largest inter-dealer broker. His appointment was announced in December 2018 and he took over the role from Rupert Robson in May of 2019.[1] [2][3]

He is also senior independent director and chairman of the Remuneration Committee at Man Group plc.[4]

He is a consultant and managing director at Richard Berliand Limited, a management consulting company with focus on market structure in the financial services industry.[5] Berliand retired from JP Morgan in 2011, most recently serving as global head of Prime Services and head of Global Cash Equities.[6]

Berliand has served previously as a member of the Supervisory Board at Deutsche Börse AG (2005 - 2019), where he was also deputy chairman from 2015 to 2018 and a director of Rothesay Life plc.[4].[7][8]

He was also a former non-executive director at Mako Europe Ltd, former non-executive chairman at ITRS Group, a member of the FCA’s Regulatory Decisions Committee in London, past chairman at Futures Industry Association and a member of the CFTC Global Markets Advisory Committee in Washington DC[9] [10]

In addition to his non-executive work, Berliand has built a portfolio of direct private equity investments, primarily in the fintech sector. On March 14, 2008, Berliand was inducted into the Futures Industry Association's Futures Hall of Fame, which was established in 2005 to commemorate outstanding contributions to the global futures and options community.[12]

Background[edit]

Berliand started his career in 1984 at a subsidiary of the Gill & Duffus group, then a significant player in the soft commodities industry. He joined JP Morgan in 1987.[13]

During his 23 years with JP Morgan, he was involved in multiple asset classes and geographies, most recently as managing director leading the Global Cash Equities and Prime Services businesses and chairing the firm’s Market Structure Practice.

Much of his career was spent in the listed derivatives industry. During this time, he was at various times a futures commission merchant representative on the board of National Futures Association, a strategic partner and special adviser to the Managed Futures Association, a member of the board of the Futures Industry Association, a director of The Institute for Financial Markets and a special adviser to the Futures & Options Association (now FIA Europe).[14][15] [16]

Berliand chaired the Futures Industry Association from 2006 to 2008. He took over that role from Joseph Murphy, who stepped down following the bankruptcy of Refco.[17] [18][19] Berliand again served as chairman of the FIA jointly with Michael Dawley of Goldman Sachs in 2009.

Earlier non-executive roles include board member and deputy chairman of LIFFE and board member of the London Clearing House.
