Stere Farmache has been chairman of the board of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BSX) since 2007 and in February 2010 was re-elected to a second term with 57% of the vote.[1] He aims to consolidate Romaia's capital markets and make the BSX more attractive to institutional investors like commercial banks and pension funds.

Background[edit]

Prior to his first election as board chairman in December 2007, Farmache also served as general manager and CEO of the BSX beginning in 1995 before resigning from those positions following his 2007 election as chairman. He joined the Romanian Finance Ministry in 1987 and from 1992 to 1994 was general manager of the Finance Ministry's Securities Agency, which established the National Securities Agency as a capital markets regulator and laid the foundations of the Bucharest Stock Exchange.[2] Farmache graduated in 1980 with a bachelor's degree from the Bucharest Academy of Economics and later studied finance at the Regional Institute of Administration in Metz, France.
