Steve Sparke is a longtime industry executive who was recently group vice chairman of Marex Spectron. He was appointed to that role in March 2018 after ten years at Marex as chief operating officer.[1]

He is a non-executive director of KRM22 and non-executive chairman of the FIA European Advisory Board.[2] [3] He took up the position in July 2007 when Roy Leighton retired from the board.[4]

Sparke was the chief operating officer of Marex, a London-based futures broker, starting in 2006.[5][6]

During his time at Marex, he expanded the global footprint of the organization with new regulated entities and offices opened in New York and Hong Kong and boosted the firm’s presence in Singapore. He directed the integration of multiple businesses, including the high profile acquisition of Spectron.

In 2022, Sparke was inducted into the Futures Industry Association's Futures Hall of Fame, which was established in 2005 to commemorate outstanding contributions to the global futures and options community. [7]

Background[edit]

Sparke's career spans 27 years in the UK financial-services industry, primarily in interest rate trading and futures and options brokerage. Before joining Marex Spectron, he was managing director and global head of exchange-traded derivatives at UBS from 1994 to 2006, where he launched and led the bank’s ETD clearing and execution business. He headed the short-term interest rates business at SBC London Branch from 1987 to 1994.

In 2008, he lead an FOA inquiry on the advantages and disadvantages of exchange-integrated clearing.[8]

He has held a number of executive and non-executive directorships, including Euronext.Liffe where he chaired the audit and risk committee, and Patsystems.[9] He is also a special advisor for the Futures Industry Association (FIA) board directors [10] and a former member of the CFTC Global Markets Advisory Committee.[11] [12]

Education[edit]

Sparke graduated with a law degree from Nottingham University in 1979.
